JAISALMER: The India-Pakistan border will be completely sealed by December 2018, India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh said during a visit to India states bordering Pakistan.
“This is time bound, it will be done by December 2018. We are readying an action plan,” Rajnath Singh said after the meeting in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer. A border security grid will be in place soon, he said, adding: “We are also looking at technological solutions to man the border.”
The Indian home minister is on a two-day visit to India’s western border. He is expected to visit border outposts in Rajasthan. “Around 1,000km from India’s border with Pakistan is in the Thar Desert and it is not easy to monitor,” say officials.
Tension between India and Pakistan escalated after 19 Indian soldiers were killed when heavily armed militants attacked an Indian army base camp at Uri on September 18.
Since then, India had time and again violated ceasefire agreement and resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in the martyrdom of two Pakistani soldiers. India also claimed to have carried out “surgical strikes” in Pakistan, a claim blown up in its face after India failed to give any proof.
Amid growing tensions between the two countries, both United States (US) and United Nations (UN) have urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint.
